For decades, the beloved carbonated beverage Diet Coke has been marketing its product as the ultimate guilt-free indulgence for humans. With zero calories, zero sugar, and a satisfyingly crisp taste that remains consistently pleasurable to drink, Diet Coke continues to remain a staple in households, offices, and fast-food restaurants around the world for those who wish to avoid the health complications caused by massive amounts of sugar found in regular soft drinks. Despite this benefit of zero calories, the scientific community has discovered a number of dangers that the product can inflict upon human metabolism and health altogether. Diet Coke contains a number of ingredients that are detrimental to human health in regular doses, which makes it one of the worst beverages that one can consume regularly to maintain the best possible health.
The primary ingredient that is responsible for the sweet flavoring of Diet Coke without the addition of calories is a chemical sweetener known as aspartame. Aspartame is an artificial sweetener that is 200 times sweeter than sucrose (table sugar). As such, only the tiniest fraction of a gram of aspartame is needed in order to flavor a can of soda, rendering it completely calorie-free. The chemical itself is comprised of two amino acids: aspartic acid and phenylalanine, the two of which are required by the body to flavor the drink and provide a sense of satiation after consumption. However, aspartame also contains trace amounts of another chemical compound: methanol. When consumed by the human body, aspartame can break down to release the component methanol, which is later converted by the liver into formaldehyde. While proponents of Diet Coke claim that the amount of formaldehyde released from only one can of soda is not enough to induce poisoning in humans, those who are health conscious maintain that the daily, long-term exposure to these chemicals is damaging to the human body.
Beyond the chemical composition of the drink, there are also a number of issues related to the biology of the human body that contribute to the detrimental effects that Diet Coke has upon the human system. One such issue is the effect that aspartame has upon the human brain. Throughout evolution, humans’ bodies developed an innate response to the taste of sweetness in the foods that they consumed. When the sweet taste is detected on the tongue, the brain sends signals to the digestive system to secrete insulin in response to the expectation of the calories from that sweet-tasting food. After the calories are consumed by the body and digested, the brain recognizes that the signals have been met, and the body feels a sense of fullness and satisfaction that eventually leads to the cessation of eating. However, if an individual consumes a drink like Diet Coke that contains the sweetener aspartame, but contains no calories, the brain and the body become confused. The brain recognizes that it has been signaled to expect calories from the sweet flavoring, yet the body does not receive the energy from those calories. As a result, the brain often develops an insatiable craving for high-calorie food later during the day. This is the explanation for the weight gain that is exhibited by those that drink Diet Coke on a regular basis.
In addition to the effect that aspartame has upon the human brain and metabolism, the consumption of Diet Coke can lead to the destruction of the human microbiome. The microbiome that is located in the human digestive system contains billions of bacteria that are essential for the regulation of one’s immune system, mood, and metabolism. However, research into the effects of substances like aspartame on the microbiome indicates that it can lead to the destruction of the beneficial bacteria that live within the body’s digestive system. These chemical compounds can kill the bacteria that help to regulate an individual’s metabolism and immunity. Additionally, the dead bacteria that are introduced into the gut create an environment in which harmful bacteria can grow and flourish. The destruction of the microbiome also has the potential to lead to a range of additional health issues, such as the inability of the body to efficiently metabolize the sugars that are present in the meals that are consumed daily. Thus, a drink that is consumed with the intention of avoiding the development of diabetes may be directly responsible for the increase in the risk of the individuals developing that disease.
Furthermore, Diet Coke is also a beverage that has the potential to destroy the body’s structural integrity. Despite the zero-calorie benefits of Diet Coke, many individuals believe that the soda is a healthy choice for their dental health. However, the body is created with a chemical composition that allows for the incorporation of citric acid and phosphoric acid, both of which are components that are present in Diet Coke. The high concentration of these acids introduces the soda to an acidic chemical composition that is dangerous to the body’s structural integrity. Diet Coke contains an acidic pH level that ranges from 2.8 to 3.2, which is significantly lower than the neutral pH 7 of pure water. Furthermore, the acidity of the drink is so low that it is higher than that of battery acid, which has a pH of 1. With each sip of the drink, the body exposes its teeth to the chemical that weakens the enamel of the teeth. Unlike bone, the enamel of human teeth cannot be renewed once it is destroyed. As a result, individuals that regularly consume Diet Coke develop cavities, yellowing of the teeth, and weakened structural components of their teeth.
Beyond the threat that the drink poses to the body’s structural components, there are also dangers to the health of human bones. The composition of human blood must contain a delicate balance of two elements: calcium and phosphorus. Diet Coke contains phosphoric acid, which introduces a significant amount of phosphorus into the human system with each drink. As a result, the body begins to lose its balance of phosphorus and calcium. In order to counterbalance the acidic nature of the phosphorus in the system, the body begins to withdraw calcium from the body’s bones. These minerals are later removed from the body through the urine. Studies have shown that individuals that regularly consume the drink have lower levels of calcium in their bones over time. This can lead to the growth of osteoporosis, a disease in which the bones become brittle and break easily with minimal strain on the body.
Finally, one of the effects of the concept of diet soda is the licensing effect. The licensing effect is the phenomenon in which an individual feels that if they perform a virtuous activity, there is an implicit permission in their subconscious mind to behave badly elsewhere. Individuals that consume diet sodas are aware of their health goals and the calories that they consume in their diets. They feel that by drinking a diet soda, they have licensed themselves to eat unhealthy foods during the remainder of the day. For instance, if an individual orders a fast food meal that includes a diet soda, they may feel compelled to order a large portion of french fries. The same logic can be applied to ordering a burger with extra cheese, or even ordering a dessert. They believe that the calories saved by drinking the diet soda enables them to consume a higher amount of calories throughout their meal. Thus, diet sodas enable individuals to consume a diet that is generally of poor nutritional value, preventing them from avoiding the bad eating habits that they wish to eliminate.
Thus, Diet Coke is essentially a product that is entirely based upon a brilliant but flawed marketing concept. The human body is a complex organ system that cannot be fooled by synthetic additives or the benefit of being calorie-free. The product that is consumed daily has the ability to negatively impact almost every system within the human body, from the brain to the digestive system, the teeth to the bones. For those who wish to maximize their health, the best choice is to give up the aluminum drink and opt instead for a bottle of water, herbal tea, or one of the naturally carbonated waters available from local spring sources.
